First Fridays is a worldwide initiative to bring art and art galleries to the public. It’s already a feature in major cities in South Africa, like Cape Town and Johannesburg. Hermanus, an hour-and-a-half’s drive up the coast from Cape Town, has one of its own too.
On the First Friday of every month, Hermanus’ art galleries in the centre of town stay open until 8pm so that visitors and locals alike can stroll the village, sip on a glass of local wine from the vineyards from the Hemel en Aarde Valley and Walker Bay wine routes, all the while enjoying the range of fine art including art, paintings, ceramics and sculptures.
